So, who is Earl???

Earl Booth, Vice-President
Holy Trinity School Division, CUPE Local 5506 and
EWSC Executive Member

Earl, a Maintenance worker with the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic School Division #22 in Moose Jaw, has been active in CUPE since 1986 when he was elected a shop steward for CUPE Local 55. Earl has been a member on the bargaining team since 1989. In 2006 he was elected VP for the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic School Division representing the members for the newly amalgamated CUPE Local 5506. In the spring of 2007 he was chosen to be an organizer for the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Better Choice. In the fall of 2007 he was elected as a member of the Education Workers Steering Committee (EWSC).

A strong advocate for provincial bargaining for Saskatchewan school board education workers, Earl is one of three EWSC members that make up the EWSC Provincial Bargaining Committee. The EWSC committee is working towards a provincial agreement with the Saskatchewan School Boards (SSBA) and the Provincial Government’s Department of Learning. Working with EWSC, Earl is moving forward to build stronger relationships among the rural and urban education workers.

Ask Earl Q&A [Click on the Question for the Answer]

Our Local is preparing for bargaining. Do you know where we can find the best language for our members?

You don’t need to look too far, just check out the EWSC website. Click on the Bargaining tab at the top of the main page and then scroll down and click on the Common Language tab.

I would like to run for a position with the EWSC. How do I get on the committee?

Good question! Every year the EWSC holds its annual conference. Members in good standing (their Local dues to the EWSC have been paid) can have another member nominate you for an available position. Good luck and for more information on nominations and elections please check our website for the EWSC By-Laws, just click on the About tab.

What percentage of my union dues goes to the CUPE National?

Unlike many unions, CUPE members do not pay their dues to the national union. In CUPE, each Local sets its own dues depending on their needs and priorities. For many Locals, members pay about two cents for each dollar they earn in regular wages but this varies widely. Locals pay a per capita tax to CUPE National on behalf of their members that amounts to 0.85 per cent of their members’ average monthly wages. Locals send CUPE National less than one cent for each dollar earned in regular wages.

Why should my local become affiliated with the EWSC?

Affiliated locals have the opportunity to send members to our conferences. These members will have the chance to discuss and vote on business. You will also participate in workshops and other events designed to involve and inspire you the education worker.

What is Duty to Accommodate?

The duty to accommodate is pretty straight-forward: employers and unions in Canada are required to make every reasonable effort, short of undue hardship, to accommodate an employee who comes under a protected ground of discrimination within in the human rights legislation.

We are starting bargaining with our school division. How can the EWSC assist me?

For starters on the front page the EWSC website www.sasksedworkers.cupe.ca has 42 collective agreements for you to compare language, benefits and wages. Check it out!

Can my employer select a union member to be on the OH&S committee?

Short answer is no. CUPE members must be elected or selected by their local to be the CUPE representative on the OH&S committee.
